The Raptor has been awarded in the mouse design competition held by Gigabyte Technology, designed for first-person shooter gamers. Compare to other gaming product, my partners and I gave this mouse a vivid symbol: Raptor, a fast, ferocious dinosaur. We also plan to apply bionical simulations to our design. The most iconic one is the connection between gamers behavior and raptor hunting.

Bionic Simulations I: Raptor’s Hunting Behavior

In the movie "Jurassic Park", the Raptors hunt down human beings and even use its second toe to hit the ground, feel the vibration to find preys. Therefore, we simulate this behavior to gamers who play fast-pace game: quickly attack, move and precisely hit the target in games.

Bionic Simulations II: Raptor’s Claw and the Skin

The Raptor's second toe, a sickle-shaped toe, is the weapon to pierce vital organs of prey as it hunts down prey. Furthermore, the Raptor has many bionic symbols. All the curves from different parts of the mouse come from the form of animal claws. The top (grip) layer is designed with the rubber material that is inspired by the skin of a Raptors' back.

The Claw Grip

This idea of poise is comparable to the fast-pace and gestures of gamers playing FPS games with their index fingers using high-specification computer mouses. Gamers using the “claw grip” have to arch their hands to be likel claws. This is done for maximising the clicking speed and reduce errors when undergoing fast-paced FPS games. Thus we sought to focus on applying bionic design concepts through observation of the specific requirements of gamers, such as those related to gestures.

Prototypes for Competition

We used 3D software to do both design and component engineering to speed things up and to plan colors and materials from the software's rendering capabilities, taking into account the quality of the model. Finally we paint the model with the color as we planned.

Make It Real

Unlike other design competitions, the Gigabyte promises the award winner can put their design into mass production. We are fortunate to have this opportunity to get Raptor into the consumer market and receive the most real comment from users. After the race, we had a production run of about six months with Gigabyte, gradually adjusting our design to the standards of qualified merchandise.

Optimizations on Mass Production Model

The Gigabyte helps us to optimize our design into a mass-produced product including adding more functions to Raptor, like sniper button, DPI quick-switch button, and, customizable gamer set. The Gigabyte also help us to adjust the ergonomics on Raptor based on their experiences. We have cooperated together to bring our product being more available to people.
